There Is No Try Says Yoda

The other week I was baby sitting my daughter whilst my partner went out to dinner for a girls night out. I had thought it would be a night filled in cubby houses and play dough fighting but she went to bed at 7 and had no intention of getting up so I was left looking for something to do. Alone in that quiet space I recalled that Oppenheimer, over lunch a week earlier, said that of all his Star Wars films that he loved it was Empire Strikes Back that really resonated with him. He said it was the darkest of all the films in his eyes and that he'd watched it over 100 times as kid. 100 times! What a nerd!

This alone however caused me to buy the film on iTunes and it didn't take me long to realise that Oppenheimer was right. It's a marvellous and enchanting film and it does have a darkness which is not quite there in Return Of The Jedi when the teddy bear Ewoks take over the film with slapstick through the jungle evading Storm Troopers.

The great Yoda, I am told, was based on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who apparently spoke in a very similar manner by inverting sentences and had a similar charming laugh. The wisdoms that Yoda offered Luke Skywalker are in the most part Vedic wisdoms as taught by the likes of Maharishi through transcendental meditation . If you want more of the back story you can get it from Limor Babai at the Double Bay Mediation Centre ,who knows a great deal more than me.

One of the key wisdoms I took from the film the other evening was Yoda's advice to Luke Skywalker who wrestles with himself as to whether he had the ability to achieve his goal or not. He retorts to Yoda 'I'm trying' to which Yoda responds 'Do. Or do not. There is no try'.

I feel very much the same when men tell me about their experience of tying their own bow tie. They often say 'I would like to wear a bow tie, but I don't know how to wear/tie/combine in ensemble/find a time/choose the right setting'. To which I am now going to employ Yoda's advice when responding to these men - Don't Try ... Wear A Bow, Do Not Wear A Bow, There Is No Try!
